The Met Gala is famous for encouraging celebrities to take fashion risks, but even carefully planned red carpet moments can produce second thoughts. With dramatic themes, elaborate couture and millions of people analyzing every detail, small styling decisions can become as memorable as the outfits themselves. Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Selena Gomez have all reflected on Met Gala appearances with varying degrees of discomfort or uncertainty. In several cases, the dress was not actually the problem. Hair, makeup, fit or simply nerves changed how the stars remembered the night.

Kim Kardashian’s 2016 appearance delivered plenty of futuristic glamour. She attended in a shimmering silver Balmain gown, but later expressed reservations about her dramatically lightened eyebrows rather than the dress itself. The experimental beauty choice became the detail she reconsidered when looking back at the appearance. Taylor Swift attended the same year’s event in a metallic Saint Laurent mini dress with edgy accessories. Her platinum blond hairstyle, nicknamed “Bleachella” by fans, became one of her most recognizable temporary transformations. Swift later joked about the natural embarrassment that can come from revisiting old photographs and past style choices.

Rihanna’s enormous yellow Guo Pei creation at the 2015 Met Gala became one of the event’s most recognizable fashion moments, but wearing it required confidence. Before stepping onto the carpet, Rihanna worried that the spectacular embroidered cape might be too extravagant, even for the Met Gala. She has recalled seeing other guests’ outfits from her car and becoming nervous about getting out. Once she appeared, however, the dramatic design immediately commanded attention and became closely associated with that year’s event.

Nicki Minaj faced a more practical concern in 2022. Her black Burberry ensemble included a feathered gown, leather trousers and a baseball cap, creating a distinctive interpretation of the evening’s fashion. Minaj later explained that the bust of the outfit had been made too small because her measurements had changed, leaving her worried about a possible wardrobe malfunction throughout the night.

Selena Gomez’s 2018 experience involved beauty rather than wardrobe. She wore a romantic white Coach gown but later joked about the self tanning product used for the event, which appeared increasingly dark in photographs as the evening progressed. Gomez eventually shared her reaction with humor rather than pretending everything had gone perfectly. These moments reveal an entertaining truth about fashion’s biggest night. Even with famous designers, professional styling teams and months of preparation, celebrities can still experience the same feeling anyone knows from an old photograph: wondering what they were thinking.
